Deadly Earthquake Strikes Haiti
HAITI (INS)—A massive earthquake, with 7.0 magnitude, has hit the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. The death toll from the quake is estimated at more than 200,000. Thousands of homes have been damaged and destroyed in this impoverished country.
The quake was the strongest to hit the country in more than 200 years. Both the National Palace and the headquarters of United Nations peacekeepers collapsed. Most of Haiti's nine million people are desperately poor, and after years of political instability, the country has no basic construction standards.
Shattered communication systems in Haiti made it impossible to determine the number of casualties from this week's devastating earthquake, but an International Red Cross official estimated January 13 that three million people could have been affected. Many of them are now homeless.
What can concerned Canadians do to help? Intercede International’s Living Word Ministries (LWM) is based in Port-au-Prince. LWM is experienced with helping out people afflicted by disasters such as devastating hurricanes which have swept through the country in recent years. LWM will be quick to assist earthquake survivors with emergency help. Please pray for those affected by this earthquake and send your gift to Intercede with the gift code HAITIAN EARTHQUAKE EMERGENCY to: Intercede International, 201 Stanton St Fort Erie, ON L2A 3N8.  You can donate through our website: www.intercedenow.ca --click on Haitian Earthquake on the home page. Or call 1-800-871-0882. Thank you so much for your prayers and concern for the suffering people of Haiti.
LWM leaders Patrick and Barb Lataillade have also been seriously affected by the earthquake. Their house has been damaged, and Patrick was trapped inside, but was found and rescued during the afternoon of January 13. Barb, his wife, is safely out of the house but has suffered a crushed leg. Please keep the Lataillades in your prayers.
Because Haiti’s government and infrastructure is so weak, and the buildings so substandard, the death toll and misery is sure to escalate. Currently Intercede is working on two ways to contribute. Medical gifts of material aid can be made of the following:
Immediately, we are going to send medical relief supplies through an airline in Florida, as the Lord enables us. These are the types of supplies we are sending: Roll Gauze, slings, 4 x 4s, silverdean cream, Ace wraps, IV fluids, IV supplies, absorbent and non-absorbent sutures, gloves, splints, casting material, pain medicine, Band Aids, Bandages, Water purification tablets, Neosporin, Alcohol swabs, Hydrogen Peroxide, Suture materials, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, and Tylenol. Donors can provide these items to us (call Richard Krawczyk 905-871-1773 or 905-651-6783) or make a donation to help us procure more of these items which we will send to an airline in Florida.
The second stage will be reconstruction and ongoing relief efforts to the Haitians in the Port-au-Prince region, where our missionaries, Patrick and Barbara Lataillade are working–especially in the countryside around Port-au-Prince and in the smaller communities.
